Thank you again to everyone who's contributed to the Banned Book Sale; I didn't expect the response and am deeply grateful. I've sold like a dozen books in a week, which is super-unusual for me. Thank you!

Until I hash things out with itch.io (no response yet), you can buy the AllFam ebook (and the script version) on Payhip. I am slowly uploading all my ebooks there, starting with the stuff most likely to be banned. I have everything copied over now except for the Megapack which is... by far the largest and may take a bit.

EDIT: okay, Megapack should be up now too. Whew.

Wow, y'all really stepped up for the banned book sale. Y'all sure showed me! Much gratitude to all y'all; with fans like you, I am truly blessed.

This was the winner of the fan poll and paid for by supporters at LiberaPay and Patreon! Originally printed in 2015 for the floppy copies of All In the Family #3, they were cut from the final paperback version. Now they live again!

Tuesday Top Five: Summer Bucket List

Here are some things that I want to do before the summer is over, most of which I have not done yet.

1. Spend some time on a beach

2. Have a picnic in a park

3. Bake a pie with fruit from a farmer’s market (or blueberries from my recent blueberry picking trip with my mom)

4. Attend at least one of the outdoor movie screenings in and around the Boston area

5. Visit the Somerville Flea

Perhaps some of my friends would like to do one or more of those things with me! (Even if you don't help me make the pie, you can still eat some of it.)

Okay, so to quickly explain what's going on with itch.io (and Fansly, and Steam, and Patreon, and OnlyFans, and and and...)

So, when you buy something from a website, there's you (the customer), the creator of the thing (the maker), and the website you buy it on (the shop). But then there's the payment processor. The payment processor is a middle-man between you and the shopkeeper.

The metaphor I use is: imagine you go to a store and decide to buy a cookie. You go to the shopkeeper to give them your money, and suddenly a guy jumps out of the bushes and tells you, "NO! You are only allowed to buy pure, clean, HEALTHY food with your cash!"

You say, "Who the fuck are you, a cop?"

"No."

"A politician? Are cookies illegal now?"

"No."

"Are you involved with the shop? The cookie makers?"

"No! We made the cash register!"

further explanation, but I am not a banker nor all that educated about payment processors )

LB's Banned Books Sale

The recent wave of censorship affecting itch.io has consequently targeted my friends, the very talented [personal profile] lb_lee, and they're selling signed and decorated copies of their work. You can read more here about what happened and what they're offering. (Content warning for non-explicit talk of child abuse, which is the subject of the comic that got suspended.)

This rancid business is reminding me even more of Strikethrough (an mass deletion of LiveJournals in the 2000s, which affected communities of abuse survivors as well as fandom blogs) than it did already.

(I have edited this post to correct some previous misleading language, since another friend has reminded me that the directive to remove controversial material from platforms like itch.io comes from payment processors, not the platform itself.)

Fuck it, Banned Book Sale!

Rogan: All in the Family got suspended from itch.io. Apparently according to the new Terms of Service, it's considered child pornography. Yes, my memoir about child sexual abuse. I'm fighting it, but a lot of artists are getting kicked off.

If you've been putting off downloading stuff off itch.io, now is the time to HURRY YOUR ASS UP. They look to be steam-cleaning the site after a scrubsquad of purityfucker Australians squealed at payment processors.

This is the email I got:

And hey, if you're like, "Wow, LB, that sure sucks that your #1 bestselling book got muzzled because of some purity wankers in Australia, I want to give you money," then thanks, friend! You're the fucking best! You can send me donations through my Paypal button or have fun buying my various wares. If you've been putting off buying my actual porn or sex shit (Multi Orgasmic, Infinity Smashed: Found Wanting, Rutless, and Coming In or Staying Out) now is the time!

In fact, you know what, for the next week, I'm going to be throwing a special offer. If you buy a paper copy of AllFam or any of the sexy things listed above, I will sign it and put a sticker on it. Your options include sparkles, rainbows, happy cute smiling things, and cute little sayings. Donate extra $ to either me or the Boston Sex Workers and Allies Collective, and I'll print you off a trans porn sticker to slap up wherever you want.

LET'S DO THIS.

Grunge elf photoshoot

Did a photoshoot recently with Cari as taken by my favorite photographer, Mark, and here's the first image from it. I really like the vibe-- the theme was "grunge elf" and I love how this image is kinda earthy, kind of ethereal as that theme might suggest.

Interesting to me how there's a heaviness around my eyes I feel like I don't usually see in myself, and a lightness around my jawline. (Mark, did you work any editing magic there? Just curious!) I really think it helps with the vibe, like as an elf I am ancient and ageless at the same time.

I also tried to spruce up my plastic elf ears for the shoot. One advantage of watching so many doll customization videos since the pandemic is that I've learned a few things about working with plastic. I primed mine (admittedly pretty cheap) with Mister Super Clear, blushed some more realistic shadows and color variation into them with chalk pastels, and sealed them again to finish them off.

Again Mark probably applied some photo editing magic, but I think they look better. Definitely, when you compare the before on the left and after on the right, it's an improvement.

Rogan/Mori: So, way back in the tumblr days, I would see this multi urban legend that you could only become multi if you'd been traumatized before the age of... well, the exact age would change depending on legend iteration, apparently nine was the magic number I saw in 2011, but I feel like seven was another. I could not for the life of me figure out where this stupid idea CAME from, and it drove me crazy!

Well, surprise, but while digging around doing etymological research (i.e., digging in Ralph Allison's published papers), I might've found a source of the urban legend: Allison's "Critical Issues: MPD & DID Should Be Used For Two Separate Groups of Dissociators" CANDID (California News of Dissociation and Identity Disorder), 3(3):4, 1995. (And apparently I even knew about this back in 2011 when I first blogged about this stupid urban legend, but I didn't dig deeper or put two and two together.) This paper is worth discussing, just because... well, it's crackpot as hell, and a nice example of why you shouldn't believe everything a therapist tells you, no matter how famous or (once) well-respected they are (or were).

This started as us reading a stupid paper about this guy's cracked ideas, only for us to get sucked into pointing at it as a stellar example of why therapists should not be treated like gods. )

In recognition of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first X-Men movie, I talked about the aspects of the setting that appealed to me and informed my creation of original characters.

In the podcast episode that I reference in my post, Jay Edidin and Miles Stokes agree that looking back on a movie that we experienced as teenagers allows us to be grateful that we're not teenagers anymore. (They're a couple of years older than I am.) I agree, but sometimes I'm convinced that this movie - and other parts of the X-Men franchise - have shaped me in ways that wouldn't have been possible if I hadn't discovered them as an awkward, highly emotional fifteen-year-old who had issues with authority and self-control.

By the way, X-Men: Evolution also turns twenty-five this year, and I'll be making at least one separate post about that in November.
