The comic geeks among you may have heard of Zuda.com, DC's webcomic contest/experiment. I recently got around to taking a look at some of the work on the site, and am sorely disappointed with some of what I'm seeing. On the other hand, some of these creators show promise.

I read five submissions from last month's competition, as well as four titles from this month's contest. Here's what I've got for the November comics.

November submissions: )

As for this month's submissions... So far, I'm not impressed. I've only read 40% of them, but so far, I haven't seen anything I'd vote for, and I wish we could choose some of last month's material over anything I'm seeing now. If you think my November reviews weren't critical enough, read my December reviews. They're nice and scathing, for the most part.

I'll save my four December reviews, and my review of Zuda's ongoing title Bayou for another post.

Hume, thoughts?

Anyone who doesn't care about my character backstory, or is in the campaign and doesn't want to have pre-knowledge, can totally skip this post.

It's a long backstory. )

To do tonight: Massive huge cleaning of room because the landlord's coming on Tuesday to sign the new leasers. Also, take-home portion of art history exam (short essays).

But I don't waaaaaaaant to. I am le tired. (Please, no jokes about naps and missiles. I don't have time for a nap.)

So, this week was all sorts of stressful for a variety of reasons.

But it ended in awesome.

Awesome fun under cut. )

Oh, but Serious Business (TM) time.

Today was housing selection. This was the first year I actually had to show up and do the whole thing, which is weird, as it's the last year I'll have to do so.

[livejournal.com profile] alassiel and Igot a 2-bedroom in 164, B Tower, on the floor above the ground floor. We're in the same stairwell as the laundry room, which is AWESOME. I will never have to leave the building to do laundry AGAIN (while at Brandeis, anyway). Also, I think [livejournal.com profile] kamianya might be right across the hall from me, which would be pretty darned neat.

Also, being close to the ground means I can probably bring my bed, which is great, because I really don't want to sell it. I really like having a grown-up bed for the first time in my life. And it's really comfy. I want to keep it. So yay for that!

My heartfelt condolences to anyone who didn't get housing. If you had an unfortunate number and are looking to live off-campus, I know a few people in the same boat. You should all go live in those apartments right behind Grad so we can hang out all the time. Or, stick it out on the waitlist. Like I said, Sara Tess and I had terrible numbers, and got to live together near our other friends who were also on the waitlist. So, sometimes you get lucky.

Ummm I still have short essays to write for my art history class. I really don't like writing ANYTHING for my art history class. It makes me all antsy.

Oh no. I also think I have another anime paper due this week. ::Whimper:: Last time I pulled an all-nighter. This time I absolutely cannot. ::more whimpering.:: Bollocks. G'night all.

How did I not know there was a new DDR game out? This is a travesty. I must own DDR Supernova immdediately. And it'd better be awesome, because the last two weren't.

In other news, I'm sick, again. I didn't realize it was possible to get sick twice in the same cold season. I mean, seriously, are there that many different viruses going around that one I haven't had before got to me? Or did the one I had really mutate in other people so much that my body didn't recognize it when it came after me again? I mean, that is how viruses work, right? Booger. I hate being sick.

Right. Between getting sick, having midterms, and then getting sick again, I haven't done any grocery shopping in weeks. I've been eating a lot of rice in the past few days. I supremely fail at nutrition.

My weekends have been busy, busy, busy. So busy I feel like I need a weekend to recover from my weekends. There was the larp two weeks ago where I got to be Sarah Jane Smith... until I got shot in the back. Seriously, who DOES that? Who shoot Sarah Jane IN THE BACK? My only consolation was that people told me I made a good Sarah Jane, which made me happy, considering I've only seen like 3 or 4 episodes of the old Dr. Who.

This past weekend was costume parties galore! I wore the mafia chick outfit, pictures on their way, I promise. [livejournal.com profile] kamianya was the cutest little pirate ever to sail the seven seas of Partydom. Again, pictures soon, I promise. Saturday night was [livejournal.com profile] mattsachs's party, where [livejournal.com profile] zapf accompanied me as the only member of the Jewish Iraqi Mafia. Pictures as soon as [livejournal.com profile] bichika sends them to me. Sunday I went to see The Goat, or Who is Silvia? Kudos to my favorite stage manager, [livejournal.com profile] misterdark, and everyone else involved.

I adore Halloween. I love it. Dress-up was probably my favorite playtime activity when I was little, and it hasn't changed. Day-to-day, I like to be as comfy as possible, with my jeans and t-shirts, but I love any chance to dress up in costumes. Yesterday I wore my Kaylee costume to campus, and nobody got it except [livejournal.com profile] lightgamer. Which is fine, because it made him happy, and as long as one person enjoys my Kaylee costume, it's always worth it.

Last night, I accompanied [livejournal.com profile] misterdark and his beyond-lovely girlfriend to see a Halloween showing of Evil Dead 2 at the Brattle. Wondrous. I'd never seen it before. I went as the second-most-adorable pirate to ever sail the seven seas. Pat was a nerd. Wait, was? Hahaha, I'm hilarious. Pictures as soon as Arjana puts them on Facebook.

I'm so excited about this weekend, but I'm also exhausted just thinking about it. The boys' party and Rocky Horror on Friday night, the Tempest and another costume party on Saturday, and I think finally, just vegging on Sunday.

Tonight, 3 straight hours of karate, because I missed last week. I hope I'm up to it.

So, I have a paper for my Italian Film, Italian Histories class due tomorrow... and I don't have a thesis for it yet. I'm definitely writing about "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis," and the Jewish racial laws under fascism. I know that much.

LOUIS returns next to nothing for the search "Italian Jew," and the books it does have seem to have disappeared from shelves...

that is, if you're restricted to reading in English.

Once in a while, speaking Italian comes in handy. So my sources are all going to take a little longer to glean anything useful from. At least I have sources now. Obviously, English speakers at Brandeis have no use for knowing about Jews in Italy under Fascist rule, only the Italian speakers need to know that stuff.

Now I have a pile of books that reaches from the table to just about the top of my head. A lot of them are skinny.

I still don't have a thesis though.

I created a few Firefly icons.

And they are: under this cut. )

I'm not thrilled with all of them... it's hard finding fonts that work. But "I aim to misbehave" is perfect as is. I'm very happy with that one.

All captions are quotes from the series. All screen-shots from Can't Take the Sky [still-flying.net]
